Ten years ago, "The 1st International Symposium on Cutting Edge of Computer Simulation of Solidification and Casting (CSSC1999)” took place at Osaka University, Osaka, Japan, but thereafter it has discontinued. However, for the first decade of this century, the phase field method, the cellular automaton method, and the in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging have remarkably evolved as a general tool for the investigation of solidification, casting and consequent micro-structure formation. Based on the background of this situation, the 2nd symposium (CSSC2010) was resumed and took place at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. The success of the second symposium led to the development of the scientific tradition of this symposium, regularly taking place every 3 years between the East and the West.
The 3rd symposium (CSSCR2013) will be held in Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland with the expansion of the symposium scopes.
