Since 1997, the French Ministry of the Armies organizes every year a symposium dedicated to cybersecurity, bringing together governmental, industrial and academic actors. This event aims at a double objective, scientific and operational, bringing together for three days experts, researchers, practitioners and decision-makers, for an overview on a particular subject. The chosen theme is approached from an operational as well as theoretical perspective, with a marked didactic dimension to help professionals from different sectors to share a common understanding of often complex issues. This interdisciplinary approach to computer security enables field users to study and anticipate theoretical or technical advances.
Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and in particular in machine learning promise to revolutionize many areas. Broad cybersecurity (software, hardware, networks, etc.) is already taking advantage of these advances, whether in the design or analysis phases, or to defend a deployed system.
These intelligent systems may be the target of new classes of attacks that aim to deceive or influence their behavior. For example, there is the Microsoft Tay chatbot.
Moreover, the frequent lack of explicability of decision-making, and the difficulty of analyzing their behavior, can present a risk for the systems that integrate them and hinder their adoption.
The 2018 edition of the C & ESAR conference focuses on these two aspects: the contributions of artificial intelligence for cybersecurity, and the security risks specific to artificial intelligences.
