A high performance discriminator designed for readout circuit chip of a cosmic ray muon detector

Cosmic ray muons are secondary particles on the
earth surface produced by the primary cosmic rays from outer
space. It has the characteristics of high energy, large flux and
strong penetration ability, which lead to its wide application
prospects, especially in the atmospheric weather monitoring. In
order to realize a low-cost and low-power and small-size muon
detection electronics system, it is necessary to integrate the
front-end readout circuits in one chip. A high-performance
discriminator for a muon readout circuit chip is designed in
this paper. Using TSMC 0.18um CMOS technology, the
simulation results show that the deviation of the transmission
delay of the discriminator is ±0.3 ns, the voltage slew rate of it
is 370 mV/ns, and the gain of it is 74.6dB. The simulation
results indicate that the discriminator can satisfy the
processing requirements for the output signals of the muon
detector.
