During the last decades, the demand of clean and renewable energy sources has been growing intensively due to environment issues. Hybrid electric transportation s ystems(includi ng fuel cells, batteries)are becoming an interesti ng alterna tive to i nter nal co mb ustio nengi ne as they are quiet andenvironment friendly.The presence of multipower sources focuses on the need of designing an energy ma na ge me nt strate gy to split power between the m to mi ni mize the fuel cons ump tion a nd ma xi mi ze the power utilization.

Therefore, the applications of hybrid electric vehicles(HEVs)need precise control of performance due to co mplex str ucture of the co nsidered hybrid systemsa nd rigorous operating requireme nts, in order to guara ntee ener gy quality,system reliability, and safety.As a critical part of hybrid electric vehicles, energy managementstrategies are of great importanceachievingdesiredperformances. The aim of this special session is focused on current developments and new trendsof e ner gymanagementstrategiesas well as the required powerelectronics interface and control for their practical implementation inhybrid electric vehicles.
