Welcome to the ninth conference on performance measurement and management control. This bi-annual conference has become the event at the forefront of knowledge in these areas. In 2015 close to 200 scholars presented and discussed more than 100 papers. Similar to other years, some of the most relevant papers of the 2015 conference were published in a book by Emerald Publishing. We expect to have a similar volume from the 2017 conference. We are also excited that this conference will feature several papers in advanced rounds of the Journal of Management Accounting Research’s Special Issue on Management Accounting Survey Research.

We will meet again in 2017 to continue to explore and exchange on current and future trends in research and practice of performance measurement and management control. The two plenary speakers will review existing research and present their most recent work on management control and performance measurement, particularly related to the 2017 theme: The Relevance of Performance Measurement and Management Control Research.

The topic of this conference is enhancing the relevance of performance measurement and management control research. This is a broad topic by design with the intent of encouraging research and related discussions on important issues relevant to academic research, to practice, and to society. For example, papers could explore the following:

Performance measurement and management control as it applies in various industries
The use of different types of research methods and how they can be used more effectively
Management control practices that can help mitigate the prevalence of corporate scandals
The integration of ethics and management control
The use of performance measures to capture information on such topics as sustainability and environmental reporting
Performance measurement and management control for the public sector
Effective management control of knowledge creation
Management control, internal control and corporate governance
Risk management and management control
Business intelligence and data analytics
