The 21st Century and particularly the past decade, has witnessed seismic changes in the global political, economic, cultural, technological and environmental landscape that have impacted on, and been impacted by, the tourism, hospitality and event sectors.    Indeed, it can be argued that due to global interconnectivity, no continent, region, country or local community has been exempt from these changes, which have often led to beneficial outcomes but which on the other hand have often resulted in catastrophic consequences for both human and non-human inhabitants.  Questions have long been asked about the environmental and cultural limits to tourism growth and most recently we have witnessed outbursts in some of the most visited tourism cities such as Venice and Barcelona where many local residents have demonstrated against the effects of tourism on the environment and on their quality of life.  Some countries in Europe have announced the banning of petrol and diesel fuelled motor vehicles before or by 2040 in a bid to prevent further environmental damage particularly in major cities and towns.   The recent and continued exodus of migrants and refugees to Europe from areas of conflict and political and economic instability in Africa, Asia and the Middle East has also led to serious and pertinent questions about tourism practices as has the continued levels of inequality between and within the developed and developing world.  Technological changes and the continued rise of different forms of social media have been advantageous for tourism, hospitality and event businesses but at the same time they raise many ethical and security concerns.  Despite some uneven progress, gender, ethnic, racial and other inequalities continue to persist in tourism, hospitality and event organisations and educational institutions regardless of the existence of equality legislation and policies.   The UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) expired in 2015 with some steps forward but with a long way still to go leading to the development of new commitments in the form of the  17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), expected to expire in 2030.
