The ACM Special Interest Group on the Design of Communication (ACM SIGDOC) invites you to submit a proposal for a research or technical paper, experience report, interactive poster, panel session, or workshop that examines how contexts of use shape content design practices and the user experience.
Theme: Contexts of Use and Implications for Content and User Experience Design
Our ability to make use of information is a function of the settings in which we access and attempt to apply that information. As a result, usability is contextual, and effective content and user experience (UX) design is a matter of understanding the variables affecting how individuals interact with content in a given context of use.
The 2017 conference of the ACM Special Interest Group on the Design of Communication (ACM SIGDOC) asks attendees to explore connections between context, use, content, and design and to examine the role of data, analytics, and user feedback in content and UX design processes. The conference further asks attendees to consider innovative approaches to cultivating productive, mutually beneficial partnerships between design experts working in industry and design experts working in academia; these groups often share interests and goals but opportunities for cross talk and knowledge sharing have been limited.
The conference organizers invite industry and academic researchers to submit proposals that address topics including, but not limited to:
Frameworks, approaches, methods, or theories designers can use to study and understand the contexts in which individuals use communication technology
Ways in which different media create new contexts for communication and require new approaches to content and UX design
Factors/variables that affect use (and ideas of usability and design) in different contexts of use
Ways in which designers can use data, analytics, and metrics to drive more user-centered content and UX design processes
Methods for teaching content and UX design
Methods used to research the contexts in which individuals communicate, access, and use information
Effects language and culture can have on approaches to UX design in international and intercultural contexts
Approaches designers can use to connect content and UX design practices to local contexts/local communities
Ways in which legal and ethical factors can affect content and UX design practices in different contexts
Approaches designers can use for addressing issues of disability and accessibility in different contexts
Approaches designers can use to apply research in different academic and industry contexts
Partnerships and relationships designers can use to examine/research different contexts of use
Approaches to cultivating productive, mutually beneficial partnerships between design experts working in industry and design experts working in academia
