Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Malaysia's eighth university was officially incorporated on 24 December 1992. A university that is contemporary in character and forward-looking in outlook, it is committed in providing the nation with leaders, managers, scientists and technical specialists as well as thoughtful citizens who are capable of handling the complex challenges of our common future - confidently, competently, and creatively.

The knowledge discovery initiatives at UNIMAS are premised partly upon the wealth of natural resources and diverse socio-cultural makeup of the State of Sarawak. While UNIMAS is strong in biodiversity study, this and most of other research activities at this university are firmly based on contemporary technologies. For example, the conservation of the natural resources of the state, through combined strength in computer science and information technology (IT), with expertise in molecular biology and biotechnology, have effectively synergized several collaborative research, both locally and internationally. The cultural diversity and social uniqueness of Sarawak communities offer opportunities for studies in health and medicine, by offering a look at the influence of environmental factors and socio-cultural practices on the interactions of various pathogens; as well as other issues related to community health.

Today, UNIMAS’s strength in research is being acknowledged by peers in at least three niche areas of research:

• Biotechnological research in epidemiology (dengue, Japanese Encephalitis (JE), Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease (HFMD), malaria), biogeography (phylogenetic) and agriculture (sago);
• Information and Communication Technology (ICT), specifically on rural communication and image analysis; and
• Biodiversity, natural resources and environmental management

UNIMAS Silver Jubilee Conference 2017 (USJC2017) will be organised in tandem with the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, as an initiative to provide a platform to foster national and international cross-societal/organisational research linkages where we will reminiscence the various milestones and accomplishments of UNIMAS over the last two decades We sincerely hope that you will join us in the upcoming USJC2017 and enjoy the conference, activities and the beautiful state of Sarawak, Land of the Hornbill where unity in diversity happens.
