In recent years, high-speed railway has driven into the desert gradually. The sand-dust regions can lead to insulator flashover, threaten the safety of trains’ operating. So the study on insulator flashover in sand-dust environment is significant. In this paper, roof insulators are taken as the research object. It proved that surface charge accumulation and pollution had distortion effects on the surface electric field of insulator in sand environment through the simulation of Ansoft designer. The study obtained the flashover characteristics regularity of roof insulators in sand environment by experimental methods. With the increase of airflow speed, flashover voltage increases, but the increasing rate becomes lower, and finally decreases. And the flashover voltage of roof insulators in sand environment is lower than that in wind environment. There are some links with sand flux. In addition, particle size of sands had some influence on the flashover voltage.
