SF6 has been commonly used for an excellent dielectric medium in a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) in the last decades. However, because SF6 has a high global warming potential, the development of eco-friendly gases for GIS is strongly desired. As alternative dielectric gases, CO2, N2, dry air and fluorine compounds are expected to substitute SF6. To replace SF6 with the alternative gases, the dielectric and arc-quenching performance must be improved at the level of SF6. In this paper, we focus on the pressure rise effect, an important factor of arc-quenching performance, in accordance with the different gases. The pressure rise phenomenon can be changed by the gas property like density and dynamic viscosity even with the same design. For relatively light alternative gases, pressure rise is less effective than SF6 gas. Thus, design chages must be made to increase the pressure for eco-friendly GIS. By suggesting a few kinds of GIS models to increase pressure in the chambers, the pressure rise phenomena are simulated using a CFD analysis tool. In conclusion, one of the best models to improve the arc-quenching performance considering the pressure rise effect is suggested from the CFD analysis results.
