High Speed Current Interruption Performance of Hybrid DCCB for HVDC Transmission System

DC circuit breaker (DCCB) is an essential component for a protection of multi-terminal HVDC transmission systems. A rapid fault clearing and high current interruption are required for DCCB. Also, a low conducting loss under a normal operation is needed for DCCB. Therefore, a hybrid DCCB which is constituted of semiconductor interruption parts and mechanical switching parts is investigated to achieve a rapid fault clearing within 5 ms and interrupting 9 kA current. At the current interruption, the current is commutated from the mechanical switching parts to the semiconductor interruption parts, and then interrupted quickly by the semiconductor interruption parts. We analyzed and evaluated the operation verification and the interruption ability with the respective parts. Finally, the hybrid DCCB was tested interruption ability and achieved interrupting 9 kA fault current within 5 ms.
