Partial discharge (PD) occurs where electric field exceeds the local dielectric strength of the insulation and if left unchecked, PD may eventually lead to electrical breakdown. In order to avoid insulating breakdown caused by PD, it is necessary to detect PD and evaluate the severity of PD. Based on the available experiment devices in the lab, a cube with PML on its boundaries was established using MATLAB. A PD source whose rise time T and peak current I could be changed was assigned in the center of the cube. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) method was used to simulate the propagation of electromagnetic (EM) wave emitted from the PD source. EM waveforms detected at different observation points were analyzed to study on how to estimate PD current. The peak-peak value of waveforms at different observation points satisfies the equation
