Recovery Time Test Method for Superconducting Coil with Direct Current

In order to apply superconducting fault current limiters (SFCL) in power systems, it is meaningful to obtain the recovery time of SFCLs. However, present recovery time measurement methods is not fit for DC SFCLs. The objective of this paper is to raise a recovery time measurement method for DC SFCLs. The experiment circuit in this measurement method mainly includes a LC current source and a DC circuit breaker. The LC current source is used to produce a large DC current which quenches the SFCL. Then the DC circuit breaker cuts off the current, the SFCL starts to recover its superconductivity. A superconducting coil used for SFCLs is used to test the recovery time measurement method. The current and voltage of superconducting coil before and after recovery cycle has been measured, and the recovery time has been calculated by these data. The experiment result shows that the LC current source and the DC circuit breaker works reliably and the recovery time of the superconducting coil is obtained. Influential parameters for recovery time were discussed. This measurement method can be used in a similar condition of real fault current to test the recovery time of SFCLs, and the cost is low, making it a valuable method for the research of SFCL’ s recovery.
