A Cross-Slot Coupled Hexagonal Dielectric Resonator Antenna for C-band Applications

Design of novel cross slot fed hexagonal dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) of dimension 20 20 10 mm3 having substrate of material FR-4 is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna has a frequency range of 6.60-7.14GHz in C-band, which includes the INSAT transmission frequency (6.725-7.025GHz). The design frequency of the proposed antenna is taken as 6.855GHz which is suitable for wireless application of STM link 1 (synchronous transport module level 1) and also applicable for the Channels of Advanced microwave scanning radiometer (AMSR-E) on the earth observing system aqua satellite. The proposed DRA is theoretically analyzed, including design concept, design guideline, parameter study and experimental verification. By using a cross slot of equal slot arms, the fundamental mode HEM111 is achieved. The simulated impedance bandwidth is found to be 7.88% and the radiation efficiency of the proposed antenna is 93%.
