Since the open-pit mining of the Changshanhao slope, geological disasters of various scales, such as landslides, collapses, toppling, and settlements, have occurred frequently. It is urgent to predict the slope stability and take reasonable protective measures. This study takes the north slope of the Changshanhao open-pit as an example to predict and analyze the stability of the slope after excavation by combining surface exploration, unmanned aerial vehicle close-range photography, and discrete element numerical simulation. The study found that: (1) The slope of the mining field is cut by the fracture network, presenting various composite failure modes, such as planar sliding, wedge sliding, and toppling failure; (2) The combined effects of hard and soft interbedding, anti-dip layered structure, and stress concentration at the slope toe leads to large-scale bending-toppling deformation of the north slope.
