Temporal Localization of Posture Transition Behaviors in Perinatal Sows

In modern animal husbandry, improving animal welfare and optimizing productivity represent key objectives of Precision Livestock Farming (PLF). Sows display complex behavioral patterns and frequent posture transitions during the perinatal period, which serve as indicators of their physiological status and directly influence piglet nursing efficiency and survival rates. However, existing research has predominantly focused on spatial behavior detection while neglecting temporal localization, thereby limiting comprehensive behavioral dynamics analysis. This study proposes a framework for identifying and temporally localizing posture transition behaviors in untrimmed long-term sow video sequences. The framework consists of a posture detection module, a temporal localization module, and a redundant proposal removal module. First, the posture detection module identifies sow postures frame-by-frame, outputting maximum confidence scores while employing posture entropy to evaluate potential transition segments. Subsequently, the temporal localization module, enhanced with short-medium-long (SML) dependency submodules and temporal attention units, generates temporal action proposals. Finally, redundant proposals are filtered through the removal module. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves robust recognition performance with an overall mean average precision (mAP) of 84.45%, providing valuable insights for optimizing sow management strategies, enhancing piglet survival rates, and improving sow reproductive efficiency.
