Gradient-Structured Nanofiber Air Filters for Enhanced Pollution Control in Animal Housing Environments

Particulate matter (PM), ammonia (NH3), and other harmful gases emitted from intensive livestock operations pose significant risks to animal welfare, farm workers, and the regional environment. Addressing these emissions is crucial for promoting sustainable and welfare-oriented livestock farming. In this study, we developed a novel three-layer gradient structure nanofiber filter using electrospinning technology, designed specifically for the simultaneous filtration of PM and adsorption of toxic gases such as NH3. The composite filter consists of a fluorinated Polylactic acid (PLA)/SiO2 outer layer for enhanced surface properties, PLA nanofibers in the middle layer for mechanical filtration, and PLA/UiO-66-NH2 in the inner layer for gas adsorption. This unique gradient structure features progressively smaller pore sizes, providing superior air filtration performance compared to conventional PLA filters and commercial glass fiber filters. At a high flow rate of 5.3 m/s, the composite nanofiber filter demonstrated exceptional filtration efficiency (99.15% for PM0.5) with a low-pressure drop (89.65 Pa). Furthermore, the filter exhibited outstanding dust-holding capacity, ensuring extended service life, and excellent self-cleaning properties, enabling reuse after simple water rinsing. Notably, the filter also achieved high NH3 adsorption capacity, making it highly effective for mitigating ammonia emissions from livestock housing. By addressing both PM pollution and hazardous gas emissions, this innovative filter offers a promising solution for improving air quality in animal environments, supporting sustainable and welfare-focused livestock production systems.
