On-farm measurements and analysis of barn climate for a naturally ventilated fattening pig barn with an outdoor yard

A novel type of fattening pig barn equipped with natural ventilation and an outdoor yard contributes to improved animal welfare. The information on the barn climate of this pig barn is essential to ensure the comfort and well-being of the housed animals as well as to achieve sustainable pig production. The aim of this study is to analyse the temporal and spatial variations of the barn climate parameters measured in a naturally ventilated fattening pig barn with an outdoor yard.  On-farm measurements of air velocity, air temperature and relative humidity were carried out at different positions both in the housing area and in the outdoor yard of the pig barn, located in Northwest Germany. The temporal and spatial variations of the climate parameters in relation to different influencing factors will be assessed. The results will contribute to a better understanding of the microenvironment of the novel pig barn and provide a basis for the optimisation of the indoor climate to reduce heat or cold stress using ventilation control strategy.
