In response to the technical challenges of low transmission efficiency, failure to meet required output torque, severe adhesion and pulling marks on worm tooth surfaces in robotic slewing reducers for automated drilling equipment, this study investigated the causes of tooth surface failure in worm gears. A redesigned transmission pair was selected and corresponding mathematical models along with three-dimensional solid models were established. The tooth surface load-bearing characteristics of the hourglass worm gear pair under varying loads were analyzed using finite element method. A prototype robotic slewing reducer was developed and validated through contact pattern analysis and real-world operational testing. Analytical results demonstrate that the redesigned transmission pair achieves simultaneous engagement of up to 8 tooth pairs, with contact patterns exhibiting linear distribution from tooth crest to root evenly. The maximum equivalent stress on tooth surfaces remained significantly below the material yield strength under extreme loading conditions of 50,000 N·m. During one-month field testing, the prototype exhibited no tooth surface damage while maintaining required transmission efficiency and output torque specifications, thereby achieving successful industrial implementation.
