Localization of Lamb Wave Source Based on Single Receiver with Phononic Crystals

Lamb wave receiver arrays are commonly used in nondestructive testing and structural health monitoring (SHM) systems to enhance the identification and localization accuracy of Lamb wave source. However, excessive number of receivers can increase hardware cost and additional weight of the system, and even reduce the reliability. Here by introducing 3D-printed acrylic phononic crystals with single receiver, we aim to overcome aforementioned limitation by customizing propagation characteristics of Lamb waves based on local resonance effect. A sensing device related to multidirectional period structure is proposed to introduce unique amplitude-frequency modulation and velocity dispersion to identify the orientation of scattering Lamb wave. Velocity dispersion is extracted from time-frequency spectra of scattering signals to estimate distances and achieve the final localization of Lamb wave sources. These findings pave the avenue for the potential development and application of Lamb wave detection methods under ultrasonic systems in nondestructive testing (NDT) field.
