Transport of high-current relativistic electron beam in plasmas and its applications

Transport of high-current relativistic electron beam (REB) in plasma is a fundamental issue in high-energy-density space and laboratory plasmas, and has attracted much research interest in areas such as solar flare physics and astrophysics. The problems involved include collisionless shocks, cosmic magnetic field generation, gamma-ray bursts, etc. It is also relevant to many applications based on high-intensity lasers and charged particle beams, including inertial confinement fusion, compact particle and/or radiation sources. However, so far the underlying physics of REB transport in plasmas, especially those involved with small spatial and temporal scales, are not yet well understood. In this talk, I will introduce our recent research progress on the microscopic transport of REB in plasmas, and some interesting new results are obtained, including the nanoscale electrostatic modulation of REB in solid-density plasmas, branching and stopping of REB in porous materials that are usually used as subcritical target in experiments, and local wavelength modulation of electrostatic plasma wave for REB propagating in inhomogeneous plasmas. Based on these new phenomena, we have further extended the applications of REB in generating coherent radiation source, high-brilliance incoherent gamma-rays, and also in laser-driven nuclear physics. In particular, we developed a new software that can calculate the far-field coherent radiation sources and based on this, we propose a new approach for producing coherent intense subcycle pulse by simply directing a REB into a plasma with a density up-ramp. These results should be of much interest to researchers in many areas.
