Effect of Auxetic Metamaterial Integration on The Behavior of Poisson's Ratio Magnetorheological Elastomers

The development of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs), which is still an early stage of research, continues to be developed. With its advantages, it allows MREs to be applied and developed in several applications. Opportunities for the new development of MREs in this paper will be presented by integrating them with the geometry of auxetic metamaterial. In this paper, we present a simulation study of the mechanical behavior of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) integrated with auxetic metamaterials under tensile and compression loads. Finite element analysis is used to run the simulation process, and the magnetic field is incorporated using the magnetorheological effect equations. The simulation is carried out by varying the design of the auxetic metamaterial and comparing it using a test model according to ASTM standards. The results show that the mechanical behavior of the MRE-auxetic metamaterial system is highly dependent on the geometry and material properties of the system. For the tensile loads, the MRE-auxetic metamaterial system exhibits a negative Poisson's ratio, indicating an expansion in transverse directions. On the contrary for compression loads, the system exhibits a positive Poisson's ratio, indicating a contraction in transverse directions. The application of magnetic fields to the system results in a significant change in its mechanical properties, including stiffness and damping. The results suggest that MREs-auxetic metamaterials have potential applications in fields such as soft robotics, aerospace, and energy harvesting. The simulation study provides insights into the mechanical behavior of MRE-auxetic metamaterial systems and help in the design and optimization of such systems for various applications.
