Inrush current is a transient phenomenon in transformer that the transformer current increase sharply when the circuit breaker closes. With the increasing of transformer capacity, inrush current will be larger at no-load closing, which will bring great challenges to the safe and stable operation of power system. In order to accurately analyze the inrush current phenomenon of transformer, a complete and detailed three-dimensional finite element model of transformer which can accurately restore the actual operating conditions was established based on the actual structural size of transformer. In the model, the core technology, winding structure and accessory structure of transformer are considered. To verify its reliability, the port characteristics and internal electromagnetic field distribution of transformer under different switching-on angles are tested. In the experiment, the primary and secondary peak currents of transformer are obtained. The results of simulation is consistent with the experimental results. It is indicated that the proposed model is suitable for explaining the phenomenon of inrush current. This work provides a reference for power protection security and power losses under nonlinear load conditions.
