A Hybrid Electromagnetic-temperature Difference Energy Harvesting System for Self-powered Online Monitoring of Cables

For the current power cable online monitoring devices and wireless sensors, there are problems such as difficulty in using conventional power supply, high battery maintenance and replacement cost, this paper proposes a hybrid energy harvesting system based on the electromagnetic and temperature difference energy of the cable operation environment. The system designs MPPT circuits and energy storage devices for each input energy source independently, selects supercapacitors as energy storage devices, and adopts the idea of graded storage based on hysteresis voltage control to realize the fusion of mixed energy. By establishing the energy fusion loss model, the control parameters of the energy storage system at each level are optimized by combining the input source power and the actual power supply demand with the power supply response time and fusion efficiency as the target. Based on this parameters, a hybrid energy harvesting system is developed to extract temperature difference and electromagnetic energy from power cables with high currents. The energy extraction efficiency, conversion efficiency, energy storage efficiency and energy fusion efficiency of the system were obtained through experiments. The system can output 3.3V and 5V to meet the intermittent power supply demand under the rated load of 200mW, which verifies the effectiveness of the electromagnetic-temperature difference hybrid energy harvesting system in this paper.
