The transmission line has lightning shielding effect on the nearby medium and low voltage distribution lines. Its accurate shielding range is of great significance to our medium and low voltage lightning protection. At present, the models of lightning probability and shielding range of transmission line are mainly obtained from the test data. These studies have the following two defects. First, the test can not completely simulate the lightning strike in nature. Second, there are few data samples in these tests. With the application of lightning monitoring technology, we have obtained a large number of lightning monitoring data. Lightning monitoring data mainly comes from Lightning Location System (LLS) and Distributed Travelling Wave Location System (DTWLS). LLS monitors the coordinates and time of all lightning strikes in the area. DTWLS only records the location and time of lightning stroke on the transmission line. Therefore, we can analyze the lightning probability and shielding range of transmission line through the difference between the two types of data. The method proposed in this paper completely relies on monitoring data rather than experimental data, which provides a new perspective for this field.
