Corona Test and Optimization Design of Double-swinging Protectors for UHVAC Double Circuit Tension Support

Double-swinging protectors is one of the key fittings of UHV transmission line, which play a role to reduce the galloping amplitude of conductors in the wind. Corona discharge is prone to occur on its surface because of the structure of double-swinging protectors, which causes serious noise pollution. In this paper, ultraviolet imaging technology is used to detect the occurrence of corona discharge on the surface of double-swinging protectors. And the position of corona discharge of double-swinging protectors was obtained by comparing visible images with ultraviolet images. In order to study the effects of the size of the pendulum and the length of effective swing arm on the surface electric field distribution and corona discharge of double-swinging protectors, a three-dimensional finite element model of the actual circuit and single-phase simplified test layout is established by COMSOL multiphysics. The model loaded with peak value of phase voltage was calculated and analyzed. The results show that shortening the length of the effective swing arm and increasing the radius of the pendulum can effectively reduce the maximum field strength on the surface of the double-swinging protectors and improve the corona onset voltage of double-swinging protectors. In addition, a newly designed double-swinging protectors was proposed to optimize the maximum surface electric field strength on the surface of the double-swinging protectors and improve its corona onset voltage. The work in this paper could provide a provide guidance for the design and manufacture of line fittings.
