In power industrial practice, very low frequency (VLF) sinusoidal testing are effective methods for power cable insulation diagnosis. So far, the method has been widely used in voltage withstand testing and dielectric loss measurement. This study presents a novel technique for generating sinusoidal VLF voltage waveforms. The technique is based on the principle of voltage multipliers and a complete novel test system is designed, which can simultaneously realize voltage withstand testing and dielectric loss measurement under VLF voltages. In this way, the equipment can become light-weight and compact. Further, the generation principles of the voltages are formulated, and its waveform characteristics are analysed in detail for the proposed system. MATLAB/Simulink is used for simulation analysis to verify the feasibility of the novel technique. Finally, a laboratory prototype and trial field tests are conducted to validate the practicability. Results show that the proposed novel technique is capable of conducting VLF-Sin testing, which provides a new choice for onsite power cable insulation diagnostic testing under VLF- Sin voltage.
