Angle measurement of HV switches from inspection video based on vanishing point method

HV switches are standard in substations to isolate the energized and non-electric parts when the equipment is overhauled, causing an obvious disconnection point to isolate the overhauled equipment from the power system to ensure the safety of staff and equipment. In the substation operation and maintenance, HV switch is the main tool to change the operation mode, which directly affects the reliability and safety of the system power supply. During normal operation, abnormal conditions rarely occur in the isolation switch, but equipment abnormality and abnormal operation often occur during the switching operation. There are many reasons for this kind of failure: deformation, displacement or damage of components, foreign body blocking, control circuit problems, etc. The final result of these many reasons is that the HV switch cannot be closed or the switch is not closed completely, resulting in the virtual connection of the circuit. The video users will use electricity, which will cause serious accidents.

With the development of computer vision technology, the application of surveillance cameras in all walks of life is becoming more and more extensive. This article mainly discusses how to use the video images of surveillance cameras to monitor the running status of the isolation opening and closing in real time. This paper propose a new contactless method for angle measurement of HV swtiches. Firstly, camera is fixed at a suitable position in the substation to view the opening and closing process of HV switches. Camera obtain the video stream data for angle measurement. Secondly, the opening and closing area of HV switches on video is selected mannually, sequence images of video are extracted for image registration, segmentation, and edge extraction to extract the upper and lower lines of the switch arms. Thirdly, based on the camera lens calibration and vanishing point method, the outer orientation and attitude information (Φ, ɷ, K) of the space of the HV switch arm relative to the camera is calculated.

Comparing to the contact sensors, this contactness method to measure the angle of HV switches donot need to shut down the power in different intervals in a substation. In comparison with machine learning algorithms, this method provide the possibility of angle measurement without training.
