The Lifetime of Electrical Machine Insulation Under PWM Voltage for More Electric Aircraft

The electrical machines for More Electric Aircraft (MEA) are driven by fast rise time PWM voltage under extreme environmental conditions (low pressure and high temperature), this will challenge the insulation of MEA. In order to design economical and reliable inverter motor, the influence of the parameters of PWM voltage and environmental conditions for the insulation should be researched.

In this paper, the twisted-pair sample was placed in a blackout oven with controlled temperature and pressure, two groups of experiments have been done. First, aging samples at different temperature (20℃-180℃) and pressure (0.2atm-1atm) with unipolar square voltage (5kHz frequency, 100ns rise time, 2kV amplitude). Second, aging samples with different frequency (50Hz-20kHz) and duty cycle (0.5%-50%) unipolar square voltage under fixed environmental conditions (20℃, 1atm).

It shows that the increase of temperature and the decrease of pressure will shortened lifetime of samples and the increase of frequency and the increase of duty cycle will shortened lifetime of samples.
