Equivalence study on artificial simulation rapid contamination and natural contamination of cap and pin insulators

Contamination characteristics research on insulators is important for external insulation design and power system operation. Both natural contamination and artificial simulation contamination have the advantages and disadvantages. But the relationship between artificial simulation rapid contamination and natural contamination remains unclear. A new artificial natural contamination test system is developed with which wind, rain, fog, drying, voltage and grime concentration can be controlled independently. Artificial contamination test result shows that: the contamination amount of insulator surface becomes saturated as the increasing of the contamination concentration. Insulator surface contamination severity increases and then decreases as the wind speed increasing from 2.2 m/s to 7.5 m/s. The results of artificial simulation rapid contamination and natural contamination are similar. According to the adjustment of the test procedure, there is an equivalent relationship between artificial simulation rapid contamination and natural contamination of insulators.
