With the continuous development of green and sustainable energy, the large-scale development and effective utilization of wind power has become the focus of international attention. Due to the increasing height and blade size of the wind turbine, the probability of lightning strikes on the blades has also increased significantly. As the components that convert wind energy to electric energy, it will directly affect the safe and stable operation of wind power after the blade is damaged by lightning. The main factor affecting the degree of lightning strike damage is the material properties of the blade. At present, global scholars have made some progress in the research of wind turbine blade materials. Thus, this paper focuses on the design selection, performance testing and improvement measures of wind turbine blade materials in the world to summarize and generalize. On this basis, it focuses on the design of new materials and surface coatings research for wind turbine blades under lightning strikes. And through the preliminary analysis of the current research, put forward the key research direction of wind blade material development and surface coating suitable for lightning strike protection in the future.
