Purpose/Aim

The surface charge accumulation on spacers inside GIL distorts local surface electric field, which potentially triggers surface flashover. To study the effect of surface charge on flashover has great significance.

Experimental/Modeling methods

In this paper, the effect of surface charge properties on surface flashover voltage and arc path are studied using a 220 kV spacer subjected to operating overvoltage.

Results/discussion

1) The temporal and spatial correlation between surface charges and flashover characteristics of 220kV GIL under impulse voltage were directly observed for the first time. 2) The possibility of flashover is decreased when homopolar charges are accumulated on the 220 kV cone spacer, but increased when heteropolar charges are accumulated.

Conclusions

The arc motion using a 220 kV GIS spacer was studied.
