摘要
The economy of Pakistan has fallen considerably in the past two decades. Currently, the economy is at one of its lowest points. China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is one of the significant global projects presently. The aim of CPEC is not only to provide a framework of regional connectivity between the two countries but also to provide a global impact on the neighboring areas as well. Railway system of any country is the backbone of any country’s economy. The condition of Pakistan Railways (PR) has dilapidated considerably since the start of the 21st century. Fortunately, the CPEC project emphasizes on revitalizing the rundown situation of PR by up-gradation of the entire Main Line (ML) railways. The project is divided into 3 phases, i.e., ML1, ML2 and ML3. At the moment, ML1 handles 70% of PR traffic. The goal of this study is to highlight the causes, impact of railway accidents and recommendations. This is done by considering the potential impact of ML1 on reducing the rail accidents and resurgence of Pakistan economy. The past data on rail accidents have been reported in this paper and how the up-gradation of ML1 in the form of ITS and Geometric interventions will reduce the accidents significantly. Pakistan is currently suffering considerable losses in GDP annually due to the absence of a reliable infrastructure system. Furthermore, only 20% of CPEC project funding comprises of loans whereas 80% is direct investment from Chinese companies. As a result of this investment and joint venture, the new developed ML-1 will increase the speed up from 105 km/hr to 160 km/hr. As a result, PR will be able to generate Rs 50 billion per year to cover up the losses. In conclusion, ML1 is the starting point in renaissance of PR as a potential infrastructure hub.
