Cultural contents of junior high school English textbooks: perspectives from the comparison of China and Mongolia

With the development of the term “World Englishes”, the ideology of English as a foreign language has been changed; English is seen as a multicultural language and a tool for communication, especially cultural communication in the world. Applying Kachru and Nelson’s model of English spread and their categorization into Inner, Outer and Expanding circles, this content analysis compares the cultural aspects of English as a foreign language textbooks used in China and Mongolia to investigate which countries are introduced, how multicultural elements are immersed and further studies on how domestic culture is introduced in EFL textbooks. The enlightenment on the design of cultural contents in English textbooks for ethnic Mongol students in China will be discussed in the end.
