Coordination of phosphorus(V) as a central atom endows tetrapyrrolic macrocycles such as porphyrins, phthalocyanines and their contracted analogues (corroles and corrolazines) with peculiar spectral-luminescence and photophysical properties determining their application perspectives in medicine and organic electronics. We have prepared the series of PV complexes of porphyrazines, corrolazines and tetrapyrazinocorrolazines bearing eight peripheral phenyl or 2-pyridyl groups, as well as their water-soluble sulfonated or quaternized derivatives [1,2].

Corrolazine complexes are good fluorophores and exhibit enhanced photosensitizing ability, also in water solutions. We have demonstrated that ligands attached to the PV atom in the axial positions (hydroxy, or aryloxy groups) allows the control the photophysical properties by modulation of the medium acidity. This can be used for development of pH-switchable photosensitizers and fluorophors for bioimaging.
