One of the main tasks in chemistry is the development of catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide as a way to obtain useful organic products and fuels. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are becoming increasingly popular as effective catalysts due to their high porosity, stability, and functionality.

In our work we obtained coordination polymers based on the 2-(N,N-dimethyl-α-aminoethyl)ferrocenylphosphinic acid and 4,4`-bipyridine (bpy) of the Ni(bpy)2L2 and Co(bpy)2L2 composition. A study of the structural features and electrochemical properties of Ugi's amine based coordination polymers shown that the simultaneous presence of an NMe2-group and a ferrocene ligand in their structure can lead to a synergistic effect to the creation of molecular materials with catalytic activity greater than the sum of such properties of individual molecular parts. This will improve the catalytic properties of these coordination polymers in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR).
