Drag reduction directly results in saving fuel consumption of transportation. It is quite important in the point of view of an environmentally-friendly aspects and fuel cost savings. This talk presents our recent work on titanium alloy to achieve drag reduction through ultrashort laser surface texturing. Two types of surface textures have been produced including groove and groove-LIPSS structures. The liquid and air flow drag performances of both structures are measured by Rheometer and Wind tunnel. Results show that the liquid drag reduction rate of groove and groove-LIPSS structures can be arrived at 50% and 42%, respectively. The air drag reduction rate of groove structures can be arrived at 11.73%. Moreover, the mechanism of the drag reduction on the laser textured surface has been discussed in details.
