Specialized rescue work during failure of shaft lifts

The paper presents the organization and operation of the specialized mobile hoist emergency service of the Mining Rescue Unit of CSRG S.A. in Bytom. As part of this rescue service, a high-altitude rescue group, trained and adequately equipped to use climbing techniques in life-saving work and removal of energy-machine failures in mine shafts and sub-shafts, was presented. Specialized equipment and training methods were presented.

The possibilities of rescue operations in mine shafts are presented on the basis of the description of characteristic rescue operations, richly illustrated with drawings and photographs.

The following events were presented:

- March 24, 2010, a rescue operation in the Jas IV shaft of the “Jas-Mos” Coal Mine after a failure of the emergency-revision auxiliary mining shaft hoist, breaking the supporting rope of the auxiliary shaft hoist and entanglement of the broken rope with the main hoist's compensating ropes - securing the cage and cutting it out ropes tangled in the shaft using climbing techniques.

- August 26, 2013, the rescue of the victims because of uncontrolled displacement (300m) of the 6kV cable during its assembly in the shaft “Piotr” of the Coal Mine "Mysłowice-Wesoła". A group accident of 4 workers on the head of the shaft hoist, level 320m - the use of mountaineering techniques to free and transport the injured, securing and stabilizing the damaged cable.

- August 15-17, 2014 JSW S.A. Coal Mine "Borynia-Zofiówka-Jastrębie"  section Zofiówka failure, breaking and falling into shaft IIz 6 kV cable. Specialist teams for work in shafts with the use of a mobile rescue hoist named as “PWR” performed works to protect the damaged elements of the shaft equipment from the shaft collar on level  900m level.

- August 27 – September 09, 2021 r. shaft Leon II PGG S.A. Dept. Coal Mine ROW section “Rydułtowy” rescue operation with the use of a mobile rescue hoist and the use of climbing techniques after breaking one of the balance ropes of the main shaft hoist, damage assessment using a camera lowered to 1000m, securing and repairing damage to the shaft equipment.
