In the era of technological progress, many mining companies have introduced digital solutions to support planning and operation.  PGE GIEK S.A. KWB Turów branch introduced a number of modern solutions to optimize the design of mining activities. Thanks to the software which uses geostatistical methods, models of the deposit are created, which are the result of knowledge about its structure and quality. In conjunction with appropriate IT tools, digital models allow for the estimation of the degree of deposit recognition, the calculation of resources and reserves of the extracted mineral and its technological parameters, which significantly reduces the risk associated with the occurrence of low operating efficiency.



Since 2000, the Turów Mine has been using a Mining Information System, which is a combination of a geological and mining database, inextricably related measurement data and a number of mining applications using the collected information. The implemented IT solutions significantly facilitate the work of the mine's services and allow to adjust the quality of work to the growing requirements in the field of design, analysis of the deposit structure and its presentation in order to optimally plan long and short-term exploitation. An important element of this system is the three-dimensional qualitative model of the "Turów" lignite deposit. The basic objective of the model is to determine the spatial distribution of basic quality parameters such as: sulphur content, calorific value, ash content, moisture content.



The database of the 3D model is updated on an ongoing basis, and the source of data are boreholes and information obtained from monthly geological mapping. Documentation of changes in the structure of the deposit as a result of exploitation is carried out with the use of modern geodetic equipment. The geological service of the Mine, apart from the use of GPS receivers, uses a technologically advanced geodetic device, which combines the functions of an automatic total station and a 3D laser scanner. Obtaining field data in this way is characterized by very high accuracy and ensures the safety of employees performing the measurement.



The advantage of the three-dimensionality of the deposit model is its versatile use in the daily work of the geologist and other mine services. The digital model of seams is used to present information about the quality of the deposit on sections that can be created in any spatial arrangement. The variability of each of the modelled parameters is presented in the form of a continuous graph for the entire cross-section, and the visualization method is determined by the user. The application also allows you to filter the results of analyses, enabling rational management of a specific space of the deposit. The software also has the ability to create a three-dimensional model of any quality parameter.



To sum up: the three-dimensional qualitative model of the lignite deposit "Turów" allows for a more accurate recognition of the deposit during mining, systematization and faster and multi-variant use of geological data in the daily work of the mine's services.
