Geotechnical monitoring currently plays a key role in studying soil processes and preventing hazardous events. In opencast mining, several solutions are commonly used to monitor various geotechnical parameters, but most often the geotechnical situation is assessed on the basis of recording the values of deep and surface displacements, which allow for an accurate estimation of the properties of the landslide. These measurements are most often based on manual techniques, which, due to the difficult terrain conditions prevailing in the conditions of opencast mining, are often time-consuming and problematic, especially during the occurrence of dangerous landslide movements. Therefore, in order to ensure a greater degree of safety against the risk of landslides, it is necessary to search for and use modern solutions in the field of geotechnical monitoring. As a result of the technological development that has taken place in recent years, innovative measuring equipment is now available, which enables remote measurements to be carried out at high frequency. After being sent to the relevant services, the measurement data is used to assess the geotechnical situation and take appropriate engineering actions to prevent the risk of landslides. Thanks to the provision of large amounts of measurement data from many field stations in close to real time, it is possible to quickly respond to dangerous phenomena arising in connection with the conducted operation and to take preventive actions.

High frequency and rich measurement network allow for early identification and determination of the boundaries of the emerging landslide process. This allows for adjusting technological (technical and motor) activities to the current situation.

Geotechnical monitoring consists of an evenly distributed pore pressure measurement network with remote measurement and data transmission from Worldsensing, a dense surface deformation measurement network with remote measurement, preliminary analysis and data transmission from GeoMoS and automatic inclinometers SAAV with remote measurement and data transmission from Measurand.

The aim of the presentation is to characterize modern automatic measurement techniques, compare various solutions available on the market and illustrate the benefits of their use in opencast mining. The extension and modernization of the control and measurement network in KWB Turów, which took place in recent years, was discussed. The presentation also describes the development of the observational method of controlling the efficiency of stackers, which took place after the installation of automated measuring stations, and its impact on the geotechnical safety of an internal waste heap. The course of works on the creation of an innovative early warning system against landslide risk, which is implemented in KWB Turów, was also described.
