Antifogging and antireflection nanostructures were manufactured on glass and PDMS substrates via sol-gel and subsequent electroplating with the natural butterfly wing as an original template. Superhydrophilicity and a maximum transmittance of 93.2% in the visible spectral range was obtained for the negative silica replica. The maximum transmittance even reached as high as 95.6% in the visible spectral range was achieved by the positive PDMS replica. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were employed to observe the morphology and structure of silica and PDMS replica. Optical properties were characterized by UV−visible spectrophotometer. Surface wettability was examined by a contact angle/interface system. The function of precise multi-scale structures distributed in butterfly wings was also discussed on the transmission and wetting properties of silica and PDMS replica. The proposed simple and efficient replication method can be an excellent candidate for templating bio-inspired functional multi-scale structures without complicated procedures and expensive devices.
