Revealing the uncertainty of road usage from perspective of vehicle velocity

The velocity of vehicles on road varies over time. If velocity of vehicles on road is stable, then the driving experience and road safety become good, and vice versa, which can be referred as to a certain type of road uncertainty. The assessment of such road uncertainty using increasingly available trajectory big data will be feasible and promising in many fields, ranging from transport, safety, etc. Despite that, most existing work suffers from methodological limitation. In this work, an index of vehicle velocity uncertainty on road segments, named Speed Entropy Index (SEI), is developed using entropy calculation. To demonstrate the applicability of the SEI, a case study using large-scale taxi trajectory data is carried out in Wuhan city. The results of the case study indicate that proposed SEI can evaluate the uncertainty of vehicle velocity well in urban areas. We believe that this work could improve knowledge about road usage from the perspective of vehicle velocity.
