The hinterland of a city refers to the area where the central city plays a leading role in the socio-economic development of the surrounding areas, which is often the main source of population and commodity market of the central city. Effectively identifying the city hinterland, including population hinterland, is helpful to rationally assess the strength and potential of urban development. Previous studies on population hinterland often divide the hinterland of central cities according to the gravity model and the scope of administrative divisions, so as to speculate the scope and scale of population attraction of central cities, but lack of investigation on the actual population flow. This paper uses the Chinese custom of reunion during the Spring Festival, based on the location-service data mining characteristics of the population travel during the Spring Festival migration, to investigate the actual sources of migrants in the central cities;then designs competitive indicators to divide the hinterland of each central city and identify the competitive areas by investigating the population sources of multiple central cities. Finally, aiming at the regional central cities in central China, the results of the division of hinterland areas and its causes are analyzed in detail, and the validity of this study is verified.
