This paper presents the characteristics of freight transport along the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB), then estimates corresponding transport cost and freight distribution pattern, which will be fundamental to the improvement of waterway transport network of the Yangtze River and the release of its full potential. Firstly, freight connectivity of the strength, closeness and the centers is calculated and drawn by TransCAD, based on the ship visa data from the Yangtze River Bureau of Maritime Affairs. The characteristics and actuality of the freight distribution is also analyzed. Secondly, due to the ship AIS and the Three-Gorges Dam ship scheduling data, average ship velocity of the downstream and upstream direction of each segment(10 segments) and the average waiting time of the freight ship passing the Three Gorges are analyzed respectively. Then freight impedance models of the distance and time are applied to realize the distance impedance matrix and time impedance matrix by TransCAD and Matlab respectively. In addition, the corresponding freight distribution models of different freights and time periods are constructed by the distance or time as the impedance measure, then the parameters of the gravity and intervening opportunities model are estimated. Finally, the observed average travel distance (ATL) and transport length frequency distribution (TLFD) are compared with the estimated. The results indicated that the gravity model based on an inverse power impedance function was the best for simulating the freight distribution of the region. It is also found that the impedance function based on time was better than that based on distance, in terms of the performance of the freight distribution models considered.
