Modeling of freight vehicles’ stopping behaviors is essential for trip planning and better management of highway networks. The rapid development of GPS devices, satellite and wireless communication technologies has enabled the possibility to analyze large-scale freight truck streams. A large freight truck GPS trajectory dataset including more than 10 billion records is used in this research. a machine-learning algorithm has been developed to identify vehicle’s stopping behaviors and recognize frequently-used stopping locations. These locations have been further classified into different stop types in accordance with arrival time and duration time distribution as similarity measures. The potential implications of identification and characterization of freight truck stops for trip planning and highway network management have also been discussed in the end of this research.
