The so-called maptable is an interactive horizontal surface applied as an interactive planning support tool that has been progressively used in collaborative spatial planning processes. However, there is limited geographic information (GI) based software that can fully exploit the touch features of a maptable and also provide the analytical capabilities required for addressing spatial planning problems when multiple stakeholders are involved. Focusing on software applications for supporting spatial planning processes and following a Human-Centred Design (HCD) approach combined with Agile practice for software development, this paper presents the results of a series of interviews with maptable users to unravel their experiences with this tool in planning contexts. The paper also discusses users’ views on the shortcomings and expectations with regard to a map table’s analytic functionalities and group work support. Findings will inform the design and implementation of a new maptable-based digital tool with the aim to support collaborative spatial planning processes during interactive workshop sessions.
