With rapid urbanization and regionalization in the past decades, intercity commuters have become such an important group that is hard to ignore in urban and regional planning in parts of China. Due to the absence of official census containing trips crossing city boundaries, it is difficult to study intercity commuting phenomenon in China. The emergence of mobile positioning data makes it possible to observe intercity commuting comprehensively. This paper develops a method for identifying intercity commuters between Shanghai and surrounding cities using mobile phone data. Then, characteristics of intercity commuters are summarized, including the number of commuters, commute distance and home/workplace distribution. Afterwards, this paper attempts to explore the metropolitan spatial structure based on commuter flows by a functional approach. Result demonstrates that this city-region has shown features of functional polycentricity with a polycentric criss-cross structure. The findings can provide support for planning and regional coordination of Shanghai metropolitan region.
