The concept of ‘sponge city’ has been rapidly developed and prac-ticed in China to meet the challenge of urban flooding problems. Pre-vious research on construction suitability evaluation of sponge city has mainly focused on engineering technology and the ecological ben-efits the sponge city may provide. This paper developed a multi-dimensional indicator system to estimate the ecological, societal and economic benefits of sponge city. By taking Changting as an example, it selected nine indicators from three dimensions which were risk of hazard-inducing environment, vulnerability of disaster-bearing body, and adaptability of sponge development. Based on back propagation neural network, entropy method, and cellular automata this paper, es-timated scores for each indicator, and then evaluate the suitability of sponge city construction. The methodology might provide insights into allocating sponge to create multiple benefits in the sponge city planning.
