The purpose of this study is as follows : (a)we develop a virtual space experimental system which simulates waiting behavior in public space ; (b)we aim to get findings about the characteristics of waiting behavior within a public square through virtual space experiments using this sys-tem ; and (c)we focus on the influence of others on waiting behavior.
As results, we developed a virtual space experimental system based on square research references and the real space experiment. The system was given an additional feature of eyeball expression that allows awareness of other people’s gaze.
In addition, the research clarified the types and characteristics of wait-ing behaviors in the virtual space experiment. First, We categorized the exploration behaviors to determine waiting spots and the factors to de-termine the body direction at a waiting spot. Next, Selection of a waiting spot can be characterized by three conditions relating to visual recogni-tion by others including eye con-tact and gaze, and personal space. It was found that relaxation of the conditions has a tendency to give an order based on the density.
