Due to increasing extreme weathers and rapid urbanization, the flooding problems in China's cities frequently occurrence. In order to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, scholars of various disciplines have used various methods to simulate the danger of flooding. However, as far as the current practices are concerned, most models face problems such as difficulties of software access and data acquisition, and the simulation processes tend to be relatively complicated. As an open-access software, HEC-RAS has many advantages, such as simple operation, easy data acquisition and accurate calculation results. Based on the HEC-RAS model in the geographic information system environment, the paper analyzes the single station flood frequency of the Ganxi Station, and estimates the peak flow of the Hengyang section of the Xiangjiang River Basin at the 10-years, 50-year, and 100-year return periods respectively. The two-dimensional simulation of urban floods in Hengyang City and risk assessments of the floods are conducted.
